The One Wedding Rental I Would Never Compromise On
If there is one rental that can completely transform your wedding design, it's not the florals.
It's not the linens.
It's not the chargers, candles, or custom signage.
It's the chairs.
And before anyone comes for me, yes, chairs are functional. They're where guests sit. But they're also one of the most visible design elements at your entire wedding. They appear in every wide ceremony shot, every reception reveal, every first dance photo and nearly every image where your guests are seated.
Because of that, chair selection matters far more than most couples realize.
In fact, I'd argue that if you have a limited budget, I'd rather see you spend less on a few decorative elements and invest in better chairs.
The right chair can elevate an entire wedding.
The wrong chair can cheapen it instantly.
Why Chairs Matter More Than You Think
When couples begin planning their wedding, they often focus on florals, linens, candles, signage and table settings.
Meanwhile, one of the most visible design elements of the entire day gets overlooked.
Unlike a centerpiece that appears once per table, chairs are everywhere. They frame your ceremony, surround your reception tables, appear in every wide-angle photograph, and often make up a significant percentage of what guests actually see when they enter a space.
Because of that, they have an outsized impact on the overall aesthetic.
You can have stunning florals, custom stationery, luxury linens, beautiful candlelight, and a thoughtfully curated design plan, but if every seat is a basic event chair, the overall design immediately feels less elevated.
In fact, if you've read our article on the biggest wedding design mistakes couples make, you'll notice a common theme: luxury isn't created by adding more. It's created by making intentional decisions with the foundational elements first.
The same principle applies to seating.
Before investing in additional decor, focus on the elements that define the space itself.

My Three Least Favorite Wedding Chairs
1. Resin Folding Chairs
My professional opinion?
Never.
White. Black. Fruitwood. Mahogany. I don't care what color they are.
No.
This is the one chair I would tell couples to avoid at all costs.
They immediately read as event seating rather than intentional design. They feel temporary, utilitarian, and completely disconnected from almost every aesthetic couples are trying to create.
Whether your wedding is modern, romantic, coastal, European-inspired, editorial, garden, or luxury, resin folding chairs rarely contribute anything positive to the design.
They simply exist.
And unfortunately, they exist in every single photo.
If your budget requires compromises, make them elsewhere.
Skip a floral arrangement.
Reduce candle counts.
Choose a simpler charger.
Scale back the welcome sign.
But please don't spend thousands creating a beautiful wedding only to fill the room with resin folding chairs.
2. Cross-Back Farm Chairs
I know.
The wedding industry is going to fight me on this one.
A decade ago, cross-back chairs felt fresh and charming.
Today?
They feel dated.
They immediately push a wedding toward a rustic farmhouse aesthetic, whether that was your intention or not.
Even at elevated venues, they often feel visually heavy and compete with the overall design rather than enhancing it.
Can they work in the right setting?
Sure.
Would I choose them for an editorial, luxury, European-inspired, modern, or refined wedding?
Absolutely not.
3. Chiavari Chairs
Of the three, these are the most tolerable.
They're certainly more elegant than resin folding chairs.
They're familiar.
But that's also part of the problem.
They're the safe option.
The default option.
The option that says, "We needed chairs."
Not the option that says, "We intentionally designed this space."
They're not offensive.
They're just rarely exciting.
And in a world filled with beautiful dining chairs, willow chairs, Louis chairs, iron garden chairs, upholstered seating, and more design-forward options, I almost always find myself wanting something more distinctive.
What Actually Creates an Elevated Wedding
One of the biggest misconceptions in wedding design is that flowers create luxury.
Flowers certainly contribute.
But luxury is often created through the foundational elements:
Chairs
Tables (Layout)
Linens
Lighting
These pieces establish the architecture of the design long before a single flower is placed.
A beautiful chair instantly communicates intentionality.
It tells guests every detail was considered.
It elevates the entire environment before they ever notice the florals.
When couples ask me how to make their wedding feel more elevated, my answer is almost never "more decor."
It's better foundational pieces.
Beautiful chairs.
Thoughtful linens.
Well-scaled tables.
Intentional lighting.
Those are the elements that create a luxury feel long before guests notice the flowers.
Many couples are surprised to learn that luxury wedding design has far less to do with trends and far more to do with layering thoughtful, cohesive details. If you're currently planning your wedding aesthetic, I highly recommend reading our guide on creating a cohesive wedding design. It walks through the same design principles we use with our full-service clients.
The Return on Investment Is Massive
If a couple asked me where to spend additional money for the biggest visual impact, quality chairs would be near the top of the list every single time.
Why?
Because the return on investment is enormous.
Upgrading from standard folding chairs to something more intentional can completely transform a venue.
The difference is immediate.
The space feels more curated.
More intentional.
More elevated.
And unlike many decor items that appear in only one small area of the wedding, chairs fill the entire room.
When discussing wedding budgets with our clients, we're constantly evaluating where each dollar creates the greatest visual impact. Surprisingly, a chair upgrade often creates a bigger transformation than adding another floral installation or decorative moment.
The Bottom Line
The truth is, chairs have the power to either elevate a wedding or cheapen it.
It almost doesn't matter how much money, effort, or thought you've invested into your wedding design.
You can have stunning florals, custom linens, beautiful stationery, candlelight, custom signage, luxury rentals, and a meticulously curated color palette.
If the room is filled with unattractive chairs, they will automatically cheapen the overall aesthetic.
That may sound dramatic, but chairs occupy too much visual real estate to be ignored.
They're repeated dozens, sometimes hundreds, of times throughout the space. They appear in your ceremony, your reception, and nearly every wide-angle photograph.
Unlike a centerpiece that guests see on one table, chairs become part of the architecture of your design.
There are very few design elements that can single-handedly cheapen a wedding.
Chairs are one of them.
No amount of florals, candlelight, custom details, or expensive rentals can fully overcome a room full of unattractive chairs. They are simply too visible.
If your goal is an elevated wedding, start with the foundation.
Because when the chairs are wrong, everything else has to work twice as hard.
And when the chairs are right, the entire design instantly feels more intentional, more refined, and more luxurious.
Not sure whether upgrading chairs is worth the investment for your venue, guest count, or overall aesthetic?
This is exactly the type of decision we help our clients navigate throughout the planning and design process. Understanding where your budget creates the greatest impact is one of the most valuable parts of working with an experienced planner and designer.

So if you're going to splurge anywhere, splurge on the chairs.
Spend less on the welcome sign.
Skip the extra floral arrangement.
Scale back somewhere else if you have to.
But don't underestimate the impact of your seating.
Your flowers will eventually be thrown away.
Your candles will burn out.
Your signage will be packed up at the end of the night.
But your chairs will be in every single photo forever.
